Limited digital service for Cox Limited Basic customers
The Cox Family Service package is one more alternative available to customers
who wish to control the programming entering the home. It is a stand-alone
digital package available only to Cox Limited Basic customers, and
does not
include advanced digital services such as On Demand, Pay-Per-View, Music Choice
or Cox Digital Video Recorder.
Parental Control -
available as part of Cox Digital Cable
- is still the best, most
secure option to control the television programming shown in your home while
still having access to all the digital channels you love. This service allows customers to filter programming based on
various criteria and to control access with a PIN (personal identification
number). Parents can easily block any unwanted programming by rating, title or
channel - through the Cox
Digital Cable remote.

Why aren’t there any sports networks in the Family Basic Package?
With the broadcast channels that are available in the Family Basic
Package, you have access to a wide array of sports programming.
Broadcast networks also carry a variety of other sports including NFL, NBA, NCAA
Men’s & Women’s College Basketball Tournaments, MLB, etc. throughout the
year. In addition, Cox is doing our best to keep the cost
of the Family package low and sports networks are some of the most
expensive. Plus, families might find some of the programming on certain
sports networks objectionable.
Why can’t I access On DEMAND if I subscribe to the Family Basic Package?
On DEMAND is a feature of Cox Digital Cable. Therefore, you must
subscribe to Digital Cable in order to enjoy the On DEMAND line up. In
addition, because of the wide array of free and pay programming in Cox’s On
DEMAND library including movies with mature audience ratings, we didn’t
include it in the Family Basic Package.
Why am I able purchase premium networks with the Family Basic Package?
Government rules require it. While many premium networks carry
programming that some people may find objectionable, due to an FCC rule
called “buy-through,” Cox must continue to offer this option to you.
If you do choose to subscribe to a premium channel with the Family Basic
Package, make sure you set your parental controls to block any unwanted
programming from entering your home. You can find out more info on how to
set your controls at www.cox.com/takecharge.
Why can’t I access more HD programming with the Family Basic Package?
You can receive the HD broadcast package (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, etc.), which carries many
broadcast networks with popular sports, comedies and dramas carried on the
broadcast networks. Other HD networks carry programming that does not fit
within the content guidelines of the family package, or require purchase of
the standard definition channel (e.g. must have ESPN to receive ESPN HD, TNT
to receive TNT HD, etc.) Most of these channels are included in our Expanded
Basic Tier). Cox built the Family Package around networks with no objectionable programming, and many of the HD networks do not meet
that standard.
Why can’t I subscribe to Cox DVR service with the Family Basic Package?
Because Cox DVR is a service of Cox Digital Cable, customers who do not
subscribe to Cox Digital Cable will not have access to Cox DVR service.
If I subscribe to the Family Basic Package, will my on-screen electronic
programming guide still list all available programming – even programming
not appropriate for children?
Yes – due to technical limitations, all available programming will be
listed in the guide. However, your family will not have access to any
channels outside of the Family Basic Package.
Don’t I already have access to parental controls?
All Cox Digital Cable subscribers can use their digital cable remote
controls to block unwanted programming from entering their homes by simply
setting a PIN. Customers can completely block specific channels, limit
television access by time of day, restrict viewing by program rating and
prevent iN DEMAND pay-per-view purchases. We recommend consumers upgrading
to Digital Cable for the most advanced, highly secure parental controls
available. For detailed information on channel blocking, visit
www.cox.com/takecharge.
How can Cox Digital Cable customers block programming?
Digital receivers provide advanced parental control capabilities
to all Cox Digital Cable customers. These
receivers allow you to block programs by:
- Channels - You can select one or more channels to block. Once you
do, the channel(s) will be blocked at all times unless viewing is
authorized by the use of a Personal Identification Number (PIN) that you
create.
- TV Ratings -You can block all programs that have received a certain
TV rating(s). Be aware that some programs, such as live sports events,
newscasts and public affairs programs have not been assigned ratings.
- MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) Movie Ratings - You can
block all films that have received a certain movie rating(s). Premium
channels like HBO and Showtime air unedited movies that carry the
original MPAA movie ratings.

What is Take Charge?
Take Charge! Smart Choices for Your Cox Digital Home is a community
outreach program developed by Cox Communications, Inc., to empower parents
and care givers to manage their children’s access to mass media content.
Launched in August 2004, the initiative strives to increase customers’
awareness and use of the parental controls and filtering tools already
available on their cable and Internet services, and helps direct customers
to programming the whole family can enjoy together.
While you may find some material on television questionable for your
family, there is also an extensive amount of family friendly content. Cox
believes in a customer’s right to choose the programming that is right for
them and provides the necessary technology to block programming that you
don’t want your family to see. With Take Charge!, Cox helps you take charge
of the content that enters your home and helps you identify the ways you can
protect your family from questionable content. learn more...
